Are all spotted saddle horses gaited? ›

To be registered with the NSSHA, Spotted Saddle Horses must display an ambling gait (they cannot trot) and have pinto coloration. As long as they meet these two requirements, they can have any breeds in their pedigree.

A Spotted Saddle Horse is a light horse type used mainly for pleasure, utility and show purposes. Its breeding is based upon the bloodline of foundation stock and horses registered in the Spotted Saddle Horse Breeders' and Exhibitors Association.

The National Spotted Saddle Horse Association (NSSHA) considers these traits undesirable and is actively working to produce larger horses with finer features. This smaller horse stands 14.3 to 16 hands (59 to 64 inches) tall at the withers. It typically weighs 900 to 1,100 pounds.

Tennessee Walking Horse

Saddlebreds, like all breeds, have three natural gaits: Walk - a four-beat gait where each leg strikes the ground at a different moment. Trot - a quicker two-beat gait where the diagonal pairs of legs strike the ground at the same moment.

A gaited horse should have a four-beat gait. When walking, each foot will fall individually, following a precise pattern. Most gaited horses travel in this pattern: right hind, right front, left hind, left front or right front, left hind, left front, right hind.

Characteristics of Non Gaited Horses
